Productivity – what it is?

Productivity is a figure that expresses efficiency of production.

The value is calculated dividing OUT by IN:

\"\"

Since exist more type of resources (above showed 4), more productivity figures could be defined.

The most used are : Productivity 1 (of Labor hours), Productivity 2 (Machine hours).

\"\"

Are the productivity figures of a Production Unit constant, or they can change, improve?

The fact is, that productivity figures are different in each shift (week, month), however the variations are betveen certain narrow limits, and their average doesn’t shows significant changes. If we want to improve productivity of one unit (or organization), we have to achive daily improvements in figures, what will result average value to increase!

How value can increase:

a) Unit produces more products (using same amount of resources)

b) producing same (or less) amount with less resources

Regardless do we speak about a) or b), improvement will happen as a result of changes:

  • Audit about current status
  • Implementation of LEAN or other productivity solution
  • Optimization of material flux
  • Training, Coaching, Mentoring to managers
  • Implementation of new technology

I work with organisations on above subjects (without investment in new technology) in last 20 years, achieving productivity increase 5 – 25 %. If you’re thinking to:

  • to see the situation with external eyes
  • measure room for improvement (without investment in new technology)
  • engage employees in their task to decrease leaves
  • measure and minimize underutilised time in production process
  • make offices / production floor neat and tidy
  • implement KPI-s for objective control
  • develop leadership skills of managers
  • implement continuous improvement program
  • increase productivity and profitability
